Description
74 High Street in Annan is a three-storey corner building designed by Frank J Carruthers of Dumfries and Lockerbie around 1900. The building features a renaissance style and includes shops and a hotel. The south elevation facing High Street is elaborately detailed, showcasing sculptured ornamentation at the top floor and a recessed circular turret that turns the corner, with a wide hotel entrance located in the canted corner below. The east elevation facing Lady Street is more plain in comparison. The polished ashlar facade on High Street has two bays with tripartite windows and balconies on the upper floor, supported by stone corbels, along with elaborate pedimented heads that rise high above the eaves. There is also a narrow left bay with an oculus at the second floor. The turret at the angle with Lady Street features columned mullions and a slated dome. The east gable has a bull-faced design with a linked pair of apex stacks, and a rear wing that has been raised to three storeys. The roofs are covered with slate.
