Description

Keir Bridge is a steel bowstring roadbridge built in 1897 by Sir William Arrol and Co. It spans Scaur Water. The bridge's structure comprises cross-braced rivetted girders supporting a flat roadway suspended from I-beams. It rests on substantial bull-faced red ashlar plinths, with parapets that are splayed outwards towards the approaches. The current bridge replaced a suspension bridge erected by Drumlanrig Estate around 1820/30, as noted in the New Statistical Account. Reports in the Dumfries and Galloway Standard and Advertiser on 20 October 1897 provide further details about the construction.
