Description

This is a Gothic church built in 1814, designed by William Burn. It has a rectangular plan with three bays. A three-stage square tower is set into the western gable, and an octagonal stair turret is positioned at the angles of the tower. A low, narrow chancel and vestry were added in 1880 by James Barbour of Dumfries.

The church is constructed of stugged pink ashlar, with polished dressings contrasting in red sandstone. It features Tudor-arched windows with perpendicular tracery and buttresses that extend above the eaves. The tower has a door facing west, chamfered angles, and an off-set top stage with a crenellated parapet. The stair turret rises above the south-west angle, with louvered openings on each face and a faceted, finialed roof. The windows on the west face are hood-moulded. A lean-to vestry is located in the south-east re-entrant angle. The structure has a slate roof.

The interior was remodelled by Barbour, mostly in 1880. Notable features include an organ gallery from 1905, framed with a cusped head, an open timber roof, and a panelled reredos. The windows are hood-moulded.

The churchyard is quadrangular and enclosed by ashlar-coped rubble-built walls, which incorporate a cottage at the south end. A gate is located to the west of the cottage, and the walls are flanked by corniced, square gate piers topped with pyramidal caps. The churchyard contains 19th and 20th-century stone monuments.

The church is an ecclesiastical building in current use. There was a delay before its construction; a plan for a new church had earlier been produced in 1812 by William Elliot, the architect at Drumlanrig.
