Description
This early 19th century smithy is situated at Courthill. Originally a two-storey, three-bay building, it is set on a slope with a basement on the east side. A modern two-bay addition is present to the west gable. The building was the home and workshop of Kirkpatrick MacMillan, inventor of the pedal bicycle.
The south elevation features an advanced and gabled entrance bay. A flight of steps leads to a first-floor door located in the re-entrant angle on the left. There are four-pane sash windows, and ground-level stacks. The roof is covered with uniform slates. A hand-over pump is positioned at the east gable, with two plaques above a window and loft light.
The original smithy has a wide, two-leaf door on the east side, alongside a small-paned window, wall-head stacks, and a high, piended roof. A floor window to the right has small panes. Straight skews run along the roofline. The addition to the west gable is constructed of painted brick.
