Description
Probably dating to circa 1840, the Gardener’s Cottage is part of a quadrangular walled garden enclosure with associated buildings located to the north, some of which have been partially converted and are now used as cottages. The buildings are constructed of red rubble with ashlar dressings. The garden walls are topped with ashlar coping; a low south wall, featuring a central gate, supports an iron fence. A pyramidal-roofed, square shed – possibly a former dovecot – rises above the north-west angle of the garden and features a weathervane finial. Lean-to structures are built to the outer face of the north wall. An L-plan cottage stands at the east end, adjacent to a garage/cartshed. A Z-plan range to the west is primarily cottages, with piended roofs and an apex stack featuring paired flues. Three west-facing garage/cartshed openings exist, two leading into a small cobbled court. The windows are mostly sash. All roofs are covered with graded slates.
