Description
Dalawoodie is a picturesque villa dating to approximately 1840, built in the style of Walter Newall. The design incorporates Italianate details, notably a central square tower with a shallow pyramidal roof rising an additional storey, featuring bipartites to each face. A lower service wing extends to the east. The villa is constructed from polished red ashlar. The windows are generally round-headed, mostly mullioned with two or three lights, set within plain projecting margins, featuring simple incised detail in the spandrels. Canted or shallow rectangular projections are present at ground floor level.
The north elevation features a wide gabled porch with a round-headed, panelled and studded door within an advanced central gabled bay, flanked by bipartite windows. The service wing is recessed to the left, treated similarly. A narrow bay connects the outer bays of the west elevation, which also displays decorative anthemion ironwork above the ground floor windows. The south elevation has an off-centre gable and ironwork above a balcony to one first-floor window – the ironwork is missing from the other two. Elaborately carved brackets adorn the eaves, and the stacks have corniced and battered, grouped square flues, with a square apex stack to the tower.
Internally, the villa displays Classical features including cornice plasterwork with anthemions and egg and dart motifs. One ground floor room features a coffered ceiling. Original marble chimney pieces and anthemion-patterned cast-iron stair balusters are also present. The statutory address is Dalawoodie House.
