Description
Burnfoot House is a large, two-storey and attic house with an attic, dated 1850, with additions made around 1860, 1869, and 1885. It is built in a plain Tudor style, with an L-shaped layout and multiple gables, three of which project forward on the east (front) side. The house is rendered with decorative ashlar stone detailing. A base course and string course are visible on the south and east elevations, and long and short quoins feature on the east elevation. Window mullions and margins are chamfered on the south and east elevations, while ashlar margins are used around first and second floor windows on the north side.
The east (entrance) elevation is dominated by a main wing to the right, featuring two advanced, three-storey gabled bays. A lower, recessed wing from 1869 is located to the left, with a projecting two-storey gabled bay. The main entrance is a timber panelled door with a plate glass fanlight and sidelights, situated within the right-hand bay. A carved inscription "WEM 1850" appears above a window on the left return of this bay. A variety of window configurations are present, including quadripartite windows (divided into four lights) on the ground and first floors, and bipartite windows (divided into two lights) on the second floor.
The south (garden) elevation includes an advanced gable to the right, with tripartite windows on both the ground and first floors. A lean-to timber conservatory, built on a stone base, is attached to the left return, with a blind gable above. A timber panelled back door is located in the re-entrant angle. To the left of this is a two-bay wing with gabled mullioned dormers that break the eaves.
The north (side) elevation has two gabled bays, with the bay to the left slightly projecting. The fenestration is irregular, and later ground-floor extensions are present.
The west (rear) elevation features a windowless gabled bay to the left, with an advanced chimney breast that corbels out from the first floor. A wing extending to the right has an irregularly designed fenestration pattern, and prominently features a tall, quadripartite mullioned staircase window. Later ground floor extensions are also present on this side.
The principal elevations have plate glass in timber sash and case windows, while smaller panes of glass are found on the west, north, and portions of the south elevations. Corniced, coped chimney stacks, plain bargeboards, bracketed eaves, and finialled gables add to the architectural detailing. The roof is covered in graded grey slate, and cast-iron rainwater goods are in place.
The interior is not accessible for viewing, although a half-glazed timber panelled door leads to a lobby.
A former stable range, dating to 1852, forms a U-shape (now converted into holiday cottages). It includes a former groom's cottage located at the southeast corner, and a roof that overhangs, supported by cast-iron columns creating a covered way to the north. The stable range is built with random rubble and partly stugged sandstone ashlar dressings. The south elevation incorporates a three-bay groom's house to the right with timber boarded front door and gabled first floor windows. An irregularly fenestrated range extends to the left. The east elevation includes an irregularly fenestrated lean-to with a swept roof, while the north elevation features advanced gabled wings to the sides and a recessed section to the center, also with a swept roof supported on columns.
