Description
Hopsrigg is a farmhouse dating from around 1800, featuring two storeys and three bays. The southeast elevation is rendered to resemble ashlar, while the rest of the building is constructed from rubble. It has ashlar margins and a corniced square central porch that conceals the original central door, which has splayed reveals and a decorative fanlight. The farmhouse includes sash windows with 12-pane glazing, an eaves and lintel band, and two symmetrically placed axial stacks. The roof is piended and covered with graded slates. A twin-gabled low rear wing was demolished around 1970, and two brick-margined slappings were added.
The steading consists of ranges surrounding a courtyard, primarily built in the first half of the 19th century. These structures are all rubble-built with ashlar dressings and have roofs covered with graded slates. The long, tall northern range contains an 18th-century barn featuring a blocked depressed arch and slit ventilators, while a five-bay block at the southeast also has a loft contained below the eaves.
