Description
Westerhall is a much-altered and restored house, originally worked on by Thomas Telford in 1783. It underwent reconstruction following fire damage in 1873 and again in 1955. The building is essentially arranged in a south-facing U-plan with three ranges and features a north-facing neo-classical entrance in a bay that connects the inner and eastern ranges. The structure is primarily rubble-built with ashlar dressings and margins.
The main inner range was completely gutted in 1955, and during reconstruction, the walls were heightened and altered, with the main roof sweeping over the remains of the former northern wing. The house has two storeys and includes two conical-roofed turrets arranged in a roughly Z-plan. The turret on the north wall may have originally served as a stair from the 17th or 18th century, while the southern turret, which has a garden entrance, dates from around 1955. The southern elevation features a three-window inner bow.
The north entrance, possibly designed by Telford, may have been repositioned in the 19th century. It includes broad outer pilasters, a cornice, and a blocking course, along with a wide panelled door flanked by sidelights and a thermal window above. The two-storey eastern wing consists of two unequal parallel blocks arranged in a double-pile layout, with the western wing being single storey and connected by a curved low bay at the northwest. The building features mostly sash windows with a 12-pane glazing pattern, corniced stacks, and roofs primarily covered with graded slates.
An unusual 18th-century ashlar-built well is located to the northeast, featuring a water spout set into the southern face and an armorial panel above, with water pouring into a trough below.
