Description
Old Bridge House, built around 1660, is an altered two-storey, three-bay house located against the south parapet of Devorgilla's bridge. The main entrance is elevated due to the built-up approach to the bridge. A rear jamb was likely added in the first half of the 18th century. The building features roughly-coursed red rubble with squared dressings, and late 19th to early 20th century openings that have polished ashlar slab margins. There is a blind wide arch in the west gable.
The main elevation faces the bridge approach, with a door and flanking upper windows all having slab margins. Blocked openings are found on either side of the door, and there is a lower window to the right that appears to be original, complete with a relieving arch. Spur stones are present at the southeast angle, which is corbelled above ground. A back door is located in the re-entrant angle. The building has straight skews, except over the jambs, and rebuilt end stacks, with a roof covered in uniform slates. Some early, possibly original, timbers are present, and the attic floor is insulated with rye chaff.
