Description
New Bridge in Dumfries is a road bridge built between 1792 and 1794 by Thomas Boyd, featuring five segmental arches over the River Nith. The roadway was widened on steel cantilevers in 1893, designed by architect James Barbour and engineered by Sir William Arroll. In 1935, the bridge was strengthened with reinforced concrete, and the northern edge girder was renewed. Further widening to the south occurred between 1984 and 1985, during which both steel parapets were renewed, following a design similar to Barbour's original work by engineers Babtie Shaw & Morton. The bridge is constructed of red ashlar, with cutwaters added by Barbour to support the roadway, and the parapets are enhanced by sculptured piers designed by Barbour.
