Description
The Holm is a late 18th and early 19th century stable block, with alterations undertaken around 1858. Originally built for the Queensberry estate as stables for the now-demolished Shooting Lodge, it is constructed of rubble stone with ashlar dressings.
The building is arranged in a symmetrical layout, with a two-storey inner range featuring pediments to the north and south, topped with altered corniced stacks. Flanking wings, single-storey with loft openings facing south (partly altered), extend to either side. The south elevation is articulated with taller, wider, and slightly advanced central and outer bays, each incorporating round-arched panels. Three intermediate bays are positioned on either side of this central section. A blocked central doorway, framed by an architrave with a consoled cornice, is present. An eaves course and cornice run along the building. The north elevation of the inner range has three bays with a central door and first-floor windows, while the wings feature outer doors and segmental-arched panels. The roof is covered in graded slates.
A quadrangular walled garden sits on a sloping ground to the south, enclosed by rubble-built walls with ashlar coping. The low south wall is fitted with railings and a gateway, defined by square, rusticated ashlar gatepiers from which the finials have been removed. Copies of original, unsigned and undated plans, alongside a plan illustrating the 1858 alterations, are held within the National Monuments Record of Scotland.
