Description
Kirkclaugh House is a house built around 1860 in the Baronial style, influenced by architect David Bryce. It incorporates a house from around 1800 to the north and features two storeys with attics and asymmetrical elevations that showcase Baronial details. The exterior is constructed of coursed rubble with polished granite at the angles and window margins.
The entrance front has prominently advanced gabled bays on either side of a recessed bay, with an additional advanced gabled bay to the right that is part of the earlier house. The central bay features a moulded corbel course above the ground-level doorway, which has plain granite jambs and a sandstone panel above it. The windows are single light sash and case style with 12-pane glazing.
The south elevation has three bays, with a typical design by Bryce on the right side, featuring a projecting canted window at the ground level that is corbelled to a square at the first floor, topped with a crowstepped gable. There is a corbelled tourelle at the angle, a tripartite window to the left, and two single light windows on the first floor with decorative dormer heads. The ground floor has small-pane windows, while the first floor features plate glass.
The house has crowstepped gables with either a finial or stack at the apex, and the dormers are adorned with stone finials. The chimney stacks are corniced with octagonal cans, and the roof is covered with slate.
Inside, the house features panelled doors and shutters, with good but restrained cornices and plasterwork.
