Description

Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, located on South Main Street in Wigtown, was built in 1879. This small Gothic-style church is constructed of brick and features an apse, with minimal red sandstone ashlar dressings on the skews and ashlar coping. The church has slender cusp-headed lights and wall buttresses.

The north elevation is gabled, featuring a central pointed arch door with a hoodmould that continues as a string course below the impost. There are single windows flanking the door and two pairs of windows above in the gablehead on either side. At the apex, there is a gabled niche that bears a statue of Jesus Christ.

On the south elevation, there is a gabled bay at the center with a gablet bellcote, alongside a bowed apse that has a half-conical roof. To the right, there is a lean-to sacristy in the re-entrant angle, which adjoins the apse and has three small lights under the eaves and a door on the return. The outer left side has a blank bay.

The west elevation features a gabled projecting Lady chapel to the right, with nave bays to the left divided by buttresses. The east elevation has a gabled bay that breaks the eaves to the left, with three stepped lights above the eaves line and a buttress dividing the bays to the right. The church has diamond-pane leaded glazing and is roofed with grey slates and ornamental clay ridge tiles.

The interior was not seen in 1992. The church is complemented by decorative cast-iron gates, gateposts, and railings, the latter in a trefoil form, along with a low sandstone rubble boundary wall that has ashlar coping.
