Description
Probably dating to circa 1810, Back Lodge is a single-storey, three-bay lodge with an attic. A later attic storey was added in the late 19th or early 20th century, with windows inserted into the raised eaves. The lodge is constructed of rubble, with painted ground floor hood-moulds, moulded architraves, and painted window margins on the attic floor. The south elevation features a central two-leaf door and square-headed, three-light casement windows with wooden mullions and a diagonal glazing pattern. Dormer windows with swept-roofed heads are located in the outer bays of the attic. The lodge has corniced end stacks and a slate roof. A rear wing is a later addition.
Unusual serpentine, low quadrant walls with gatepiers extend south of the lodge to the roadside. Long quadrant walls incorporating a gateway also reach the roadside. The architraves and hood-moulds may be re-used elements, similar to details found in the top floor of the central tower at Barjarg House.
