Description
Shawsholm House is a building that has three main phases of construction, with its core dating back to the late 17th or early 18th century. The original two-storey house, which now serves as the rear wing, was expanded in the mid-18th century with a full-height addition on the west side, creating a T-shaped plan. Before the mid-19th century, a full-size bay was added to the north re-entrant angle.
The exterior features pebble-dashing with some ashlar margins on the north and south sides. The original house has a full-length lean-to against the east gable, with straight skews and a large apex stack on the gable, while all other roofs are piended. There is a canted window and a wide lean-to on the south side. The mid-18th century addition has a west elevation with five irregular bays, and an inner door located behind a modern porch, with a single bay on either side. The building has sash windows throughout, featuring small-paned glazing, and wallhead stacks located in the roof valley, all covered by slate roofs.
Inside, some doors have raised and fielded panels, and the plasterwork features mostly simple cornices.
