Description
Corner House is a late 18th century, symmetrical, end-of-terrace house situated on the corner of two main roads at the southeastern end of Closeburn village. Originally a three-bay, L-plan building with a classical design and broadly spaced windows, it was used as a shop and public house. It is now a two-storey structure.
The house is constructed of painted rubble stone, accented by droved quoins and smooth stone margins outlining the corners, door, and window openings. A smooth band course runs along the top of the street elevations. The main entrance, located centrally on the front elevation, features a two-leaf timber boarded door topped by a triple-glazed fanlight.
The street-facing windows are timber sash windows with a twelve-pane glazing pattern and timber boarded shutters. The roof is piended slate, with stone ridge tiles, hips, and a pair of rendered chimney stacks.
Two 20th century single-storey, pitched-roof additions extend from the rear. The southernmost addition, dating to the early 20th century, is constructed of painted brick, while the later 20th century addition is smooth rendered.
A stone milepost with an angled top, inscribed with the number ‘12’, is located at the corner of the building. An Ordnance Survey benchmark is inscribed on the adjacent stone corner margin. A low coped wall with plain iron railings fronts the property, and a rubble wall with rounded stone copes on a lying stone course encloses the rear garden.
The interior, viewed in 2018, retains late 18th century detailing. The entrance hall spans the front of the house and features a pair of archways, one leading to an enclosed staircase. Doors are a combination of six-panel doors with decorative architraves and simpler boarded doors. Fielded panelling is located under the windows, which are fitted with timber shutters. Other original features include contemporary fire surrounds, plain cornicing, and picture rails. The first-floor bathroom features timber panelling, a bespoke timber cupboard, and a mirror.
