Description
Wamphray Mill is a corn mill built around 1764, accompanied by a contemporary mill house. The mill and house are set at right angles to each other and both were raised in height during the 19th century, featuring ashlar quoins. They have been converted for domestic use, which includes the addition of rooflights and doors, and are connected by a timber corridor designed by architect Peter Barefoot of Ipswich. The mill wheel remains, though it is in poor condition as of 1987, and the lade has been removed. The structure is built of rubble with ashlar dressings, and modern openings have been made in concrete; the exterior is all whitewashed with slate roofs.
The mill has a rectangular plan and features a breast-shot timber and cast-iron wheel on the northern gable. There are square outshots on each side, and the main roof sweeps over them. The southern gable has openings at three levels, along with a loading platform facing the road.
The house is a single storey with an attic and has a southern elevation with three bays. It features an off-centre door, gabled wallhead dormers in the outer bays, and ground floor openings with chamfered margins. The house sits on a boulder base on sloping ground to the left. There is a full-width modern flat-roofed addition to the north, which includes an unattractive stack, and a rebuilt small end stack.
