Description

The harbour at Garlieston was originally a natural harbour, but was built out in 1815 and subsequently enlarged and improved in 1838, 1842, 1843, and 1854. It follows a Z-plan with a short breakwater known as Dumbie Breakwater and three sections of quay. The quays are constructed of rubble with some concrete patching, coping stones, recent tarmac surfaces, and timber rubbing posts, many of which are now circular in cross-section. A rubble boundary wall runs along the perimeter. A set of stairs is inset into the breakwater at the re-entrant angle.

A late 19th-century transit shed stands on the south-east quay. It is a single-storey building with a piended roof and open front and sides. The rear wall is rubble and incorporates part of the boundary wall. The quayside is supported on five (originally seven) cast-iron columns with moulded capitals and square tops; the end column on the right has been replaced by a steel joist. Short side walls are built in brick, and a later brick store has been inserted into the rear corner on the left. The roof is felted on the sides and slated at the front, with large graduated slates. Stone ridges are present, though some are missing.

A warehouse on the central quay likely dates to around 1838. It is a symmetrical, two-storey building of five bays constructed of rubble with prominent ashlar dressings and a piended roof. It features two hoist doors alternating with windows, projecting above the eaves level, with open-eaved dormer roofs. Ground floor doors are situated below the hoist doors; the door on the left has been enlarged and fitted with a sliding door. The upper-floor windows are square, while the lower-floor windows are rectangular, and all are now bricked-up except for two first-floor windows. The roof is slated. To the left is a single-storey, piended-roof extension, encompassing a door and a window and incorporating a section of the boundary wall into its front wall.

A warehouse situated to the south of the south-west quay, formerly Wylie's Mill Office, was probably built around 1855. It is a two-storey, five-bay building of rubble with dressed margins. It has a gabled roof with two hoist doors projecting into gablets with open eaves. The hoist door on the left has been bricked up and converted into a window, flanked by single windows. The lower level fenestration to the west has been altered, featuring a doorway to the right of the hoist door, two windows to the left, and two to the right, the latter being bipartite with timber mullions and transoms. A hoist door is located on the right, alongside windows on the right, with an enlarged door below, fitted with sliding doors and a window to the right. The roof is gabled, with graduated slates and stone ridges.

The breakwater, constructed in 1843, features battered rubble walls. It is partially ruinous towards the coastal end and is sited at the south end of the harbour.
