Description
Dated 1702, with repairs undertaken in 1825 and 1884, Hislop's Grave is a memorial located at Craighaugh. The monument consists of an inscribed flat stone raised on upright slabs set on a tomb chest arrangement. The vertical end slabs are likely from the 1825 repair, while the longer slabs probably date from 1884. All elements are constructed from ashlar. The inscription reads "Here lyes Andr. Hyslop/martyr shot dead upon this place by Sir James Johnston of We(ste)rhall/and John Graham of C/laverhouse...... May 12 1685......"; along with "Repaired by subscription April 1825" and "Repaired by Wm Hoope Esq from Liverpool July 1884".
