Outbuilding, Rayleigh House, Eskdalemuir Observatory

This outbuilding, dated 1908 and designed by W T Oldrieve, is a two-storey villa-style observatory residence constructed in the Arts and Crafts movement. The building features complex slate roofs, some battered walls, and gabled bays where skews run horizontally above the angles. The exterior is primarily roughly-coursed and squared whinstone with contrasting long and short dressings, and segmental window arches with contrasting voussoirs. The elevations are generally three bays wide, except at the rear. The symmetrical south entrance front includes a canted, flat-roofed porch with a window above, and taller outer bays. Most windows are sash windows with 12-pane glazing. Coped stacks are present. A north-facing two-light dormer window is built of stone, and the apices of the main roofs are louvred.

To the north of the main building are two detached outbuildings in a similar style. The outbuilding closest to the east is single-storey and west-facing. It has a coach-house within a gabled right bay which includes a loft door above and a dovecote below the eaves on the southern return. The outbuilding closest to the north is plainer, two storeys high, with square-headed first-floor windows. This block has been converted for residential use and now has modern glazing.
