Description
Ardwell Mill is an early 19th-century single-storey meal mill, with a two-storey section to the north. The building has a linear plan and includes a barn, mill, and kiln. It is constructed of pointed rubble, with some brick repairs and granite quoins.
The west elevation is asymmetrical and features six bays. The two-storey, two-bay mill is set forward in the centre, with a brick infilled opening that was formerly for a wheel on the ground floor. There is a window opening to the right and two openings on the first floor. A gabled, two-leaf boarded timber door breaks the eaves to the right return, while a small four-pane window is located on the ground floor of the left return. The adjoining barn to the right has small openings, and to the left, the kiln has a brick infilled doorway flanked by two irregular openings.
The south elevation is symmetrical and single-storey, with a partially brick infilled opening at the centre.
The east elevation is asymmetrical and consists of six bays. It features a single-storey, two-bay barn with irregular small openings to the left, and a two-storey, four-bay mill and kiln to the right. A large buttress is located at the centre, flanked to the left by an opening on the ground floor and two openings above. There is a brick infilled doorway to the right of the ground floor and irregular openings in the remaining bays to the right.
The north elevation is blank. Most glazing has been lost, with the exception of two-pane skylights. The roof is piended and covered with grey slate, featuring tiled and lead ridges, and there are remains of a ventilator at the ridge to the north. The interior was not seen in 1999.
