Description
The Royal Hotel, located on St Cuthbert Street in Kirkcudbright, dates from around 1860 and includes a later addition that serves as a bank. The building stands three storeys tall, with the second floor possibly being a later addition. It features three asymmetrical bays facing St Mary's Street and six asymmetrical bays on St Cuthbert's Street. The bank section has a modern polished granite facade, while the rest of the hotel is constructed of painted rubble with ashlar margins.
On St Mary's Street, the first and second floors have a single central window, with bipartite windows in the outer bays, the left bay being more prominent. St Cuthbert's Street showcases bipartite windows on each floor in the similarly advanced bays, with five recessed bays and a consoled doorpiece on the right, and four bipartite windows on the left. The right side of the first and second floors features two bipartite windows, while the left side has three single lights. A continuous cornice runs above the first-floor windows, complemented by an eaves course, ridge stacks, and a slate roof that is piended at the corner.
Additionally, there is a three-bay extension on St Cuthbert's Street, originally a two-storey house with an attic. This extension is made of painted snecked rubble with long and short dressings, featuring a central pilastered door and a later pilastered and corniced window at the angle. It also has three swept-roofed dormers and a slate roof.
