Description
The Selkirk Memorial, located on St Mary Street in Kirkcudbright, was designed by J Aldam Heaton with sculpture work by Farmer and Brindley of London in 1885. This memorial honors Dunbar James, the Earl of Selkirk, who lived from April 22, 1808, to April 11, 1885. The structure features a 20-foot high wheel cross that incorporates designs from the Aberlemno and Kildalton crosses. It is made of silver grey granite sourced from the Kemnay quarries. The inscription reads, "Erected by Cecily Louisa, Countess of Selkirk, in loving memory of her husband, Dunbar James, Earl of Selkirk, born 22 April 1808; died 11 April 1885."
