Description

Fernlea is a pair of houses built in the later 19th century, standing two stories high with a first floor that breaks the eaves. The building features a seven-bay arrangement (1-2-1-2-1), with Fernlea occupying four bays on the right. The exterior is rendered, with channelled masonry at the ground floor.

On the north elevation facing Main Street, there are doors located in the bays to the left and right of the center, as well as in the penultimate bay to the left. The ground floor has bipartite windows at the center and in the outer bay to the right, while the remaining two bays feature single light windows. The first floor has windows at the center and in the outer bays, each with a bracketed sill and a pedimented dormer head. A cornice runs between the ground and first floors, ending with decorative consoles.

The east elevation is adjoined to Nos 66 and 68 Main Street, while the west elevation connects to a slightly lower building, Nos 56 - 60 Main Street. Fernlea has sash and case windows with 2- and 4-pane glazing, while Roseneath has modern glazing. The building features a concrete coped skew to the northwest, with rendered stacks that have a red sandstone band. The gablehead is on the west side, and the ridge is above the bay to the left of center. The roof is covered with modern tiles, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods with decorative iron gutter fixtures, with downpipes that continue through the ground floor cornice and octagonal cans.
