Description
Dumcrieff is a classical house likely built in the late 18th or early 19th century. It has two storeys and features a pedimented, 7-bay facade that encases an earlier house. The building was enlarged to the rear, probably in 1828, with an L-plan wing that creates a symmetrical west elevation, which serves as the main entrance, and includes a deeply recessed 3-bay center. It is situated above a steep river bank, with a basement on the east side. The exterior is finished in painted rubble with ashlar dressings.
The original house features three closely spaced bays on the south elevation, which are slightly advanced and topped with a pediment that includes a blind thermal window in the tympanum. There is a balustraded loggia at ground level, which may have been contemporary with the rear wing, and a central door that has been converted into a window.
On the west elevation, there is a prominent central doorpiece flanked by two Doric columns in antis, with a panelled door and a wide segmental-arched fanlight above, which extends over sidelights. The upper section is tripartite, and there are wall-head stacks over the advanced bays.
The building features corniced end and axial stacks throughout, with piended roofs covered in graded slates. Inside, the interiors are fairly plain and reflect late Georgian style, with a cantilevered stone stair located at the north end of the original house, now encased by the wing.
