Description

Penpont Parish Church, designed by architect Charles Howitt of the Drumlanrig estate, was built in 1867. This Gothic church has a cruciform plan and features a square tower topped with a broach spire, all constructed from bull-faced pink ashlar with polished dressings. The exterior includes hood-moulds and beak-head mouldings at the eaves, along with stepped angle buttresses.

The tower is undivided into stages and has a north-facing door with moulded reveals and an arch, a stair window above, and louvered three-light belfry openings on each elevation. There is a clock on the elevations facing the village, lucarnes at the base of the spire, and a weathervane finial. The church has a tall three-light window with a splayed cill course, a cross finial, and shaped skews on each gable, along with a central doorway, except on the north side. The building features shallow transepts and a nave with three buttressed bays, as well as shallow vestry and organ outshots on either side of the chancel. The roof is made of slate.

Inside, the chancel has simple wainscot panelling by P MacGregor Chalmers, a fine oak communion table with art nouveau ornament, and an open-timbered roof.

The churchyard has an irregular plan, with an earlier enclosure to the east of the church featuring rubble-built walls capped with ashlar. This was extended to the west around 1867 and is enclosed by plain iron railings on a low wall, with a gate at the north. The churchyard contains mostly 17th-19th century stone monuments to the east of the church, including a Renaissance mural monument near the east gable.
