Description
Glen is an earlier 18th century, 2-storey and attic farmhouse with a symmetrical 5-bay design. The rear quoin is inscribed with 'Founded 1734 by I McD', although the script appears to have been recut in a 19th century style. The house was re-roofed in the later 19th century and features thickly rendered walls with painted margins and rusticated quoins. The wide central entrance has a double-leaf panelled door and a fanlight above it. All windows are sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern, and there is a moulded eaves cornice. The flanks of the house have windows, including small attic windows. The rear elevation includes a later 19th century granite rubble projecting wing, which is lower and has both 2-storey and single-storey sections. Most rear windows of the main house do not have margins. The roof was re-covered in the later 19th century with overhanging slates and coped end stacks, and there are a pair of later 19th century dormers on the rear. Rooflights are present, with three on the front and one on the rear.
Inside, the layout is rectangular with a tripartite division and two rooms in depth. There is a central hall with a wide stairway at the rear, flanked by two inter-communicating rooms on each side. The southwest ground floor room features a carved chimneypiece in an 18th century style, which may not be original but is set in a deep authentic hearth.
The stable block, likely built around the same time as the house, is situated on sloping ground and has a rectangular plan with whitewashed rubble. It features a segmental carriage opening to the outer right, a stable door, and a square opening at the center. There is a stone forestair and a hayloft door in the gable end to the left. The roof was recently destroyed by fire and has been replaced with corrugated sheet metal.
