Description
The stable block, likely dating to the mid-18th century with later alterations, was built around a cobbled, long rectangular courtyard. The design incorporates a square entrance tower with a passage (pend) on each long wall, and pyramidal-roofed square towers at each corner, all linked by lower, narrower wings. The stable block is single-storey with lofts or attics; the south end has been adapted for domestic use, including a tearoom, and features dormers.
The exterior is constructed of limewashed rubble with ashlar detailing. A pedimented and round-arched main entrance is located on the east side, featuring banded detailing at the impost level and a row of dovecot flight holes above the keystone; the pediment is finished with urn finials and a blind oculus within the tympanum. The interior of the arch is partly filled by a loft floor. A matching tower on the opposite side has an off-centre segmental-arched passage. The windows are mostly square-headed, with some round-arched examples, several having been altered or blocked. A low range on the north side has altered openings to the courtyard and a roof ventilator. The roofs are covered with graded slates and a single urn finial sits atop the south-west tower.
A row of blocked dovecot flight holes is visible on the north-west tower. The stable block is closely related to Arbigland House.
