Description
These entrance gate piers, along with associated curved low quadrant walls and wooden railings, were built circa 1805 for Arbigland House. The piers are corniced and square, topped with urn finials and raised on stepped blocks, constructed of channelled red ashlar. The inner walls of the quadrant walls are built of channelled red ashlar, while the outer walls are rubble-built with an ashlar cope. The gate piers were designed by Allan Cunningham, a mason who was also a poet. Information regarding the gate piers, including a pamphlet by Captain J B Blackett, can be found in the Ewart Library, Dumfries.
