Description

The West Range, Kennels, and associated structures at Arbigland House date primarily to the earlier to mid-18th century, initially as a single-story cottage. The layout has since been altered with substantial additions, creating a roughly T-shaped plan. The building is constructed of painted rubble with contrasting margins and cills. A tall, gabled south wing, likely dating from the mid-19th Century, features a single, south-facing window on either side. A kitchen addition is located at the north end, with a door set in the re-entrant angle, and the roof sweeps over this section. A bronze plaque is affixed to an otherwise blank wall. End stacks are present, topped with graded grey slates.

The kennels, dating from circa 1860, were further modified in 2003. The original kennel building was roughly square in plan, with a lean-to kennel section and two adjoining walled enclosures. These enclosures are enclosed by high, spiked wrought-iron fences and gates to the rear. The kennel building has a piended roof with a gable to the rear and is irregularly fenestrated with casement windows and timber boarded doors. A large extension to the southwest was added in 2003. The original kennel building is lime-washed random rubble with sandstone ashlar margins, while the extension is of random rubble. A coped gablehead stack features two later red clay cans, and the roof is covered in graded grey slates with grey ridge tiles. A decorative cast-iron pump and rectangular sandstone trough are located at the rear of the kennels.

A pump and trough constructed from decorative cast-iron and sandstone are situated behind the kennels.

Arbigland House was the birthplace and childhood home of Admiral John Paul Jones (1747-1792), known as the "Father of the American Navy." A plaque commemorating this fact was erected in 1953 by the Naval History Association and the Army and Navy Chapter of the American Revolution in Washington D.C. The structure was repaired in the early 19th century by Lt. Pinkham of the American Navy, details of which can be found in the New Statistical Account and on the website www.jpj.demon.co.uk. The south wing of the cottage does not appear on the earliest Ordnance Survey map (1st edition). The cottage is shown on an 1854 Ordnance Survey map and the kennels appear on an 1861 Ordnance Survey map.
