Description
Courance is a house dating to approximately 1840, built in the style of Walter Newall of Dumfries. It incorporates a simpler, earlier 18th century house which now forms the lower rear wing. The house is two storeys high with a basement, and has a T-plan layout.
The main house is constructed of red ashlar and features shallow projecting mullioned windows, mostly bipartite, with cornices at ground level. The bay on the south elevation is slightly advanced and has a blocking course above the main cornice. A corniced porch with an arcaded frieze is set off above the basement level. A band runs between the floors. Stacks are symmetrically placed and have been cut down. The roof is now covered with modern concrete tiles.
The rear wing’s upper floor was likely not originally rendered and now has red ashlar margins. The lower wing to the north has had two garage doors inserted. Octagonal gatepiers and railings run alongside the east side. A tall, rubble-built stone wall with ashlar coping and a blocked circular opening encloses the north end of the garden. The garden itself is bowed to the south with further gatepiers, decorative wrought-iron gates, and railings beside the main house. The statutory address also includes the garden wall, gatepiers, and railings.
