Description
This is an earlier 19th-century, 2-storey, 3-bay farmhouse situated at Kirkland. It features full-height rear wings. The farmhouse is constructed of rubble, painted with contrasting ashlar dressings. The south elevation has a ground floor that has been brought forward, likely during a mid-19th century alteration. This section has a continuous etablature (a decorative projecting moulding). A central doorpiece is pilastered, framing a round-headed doorway with a panelled door and decorative fanlight. The windows are 12 or 4-pane sashes, demarcated by an eaves/lintel band, and a cornice. Two symmetrically placed ridge stacks are present, and the roof is covered in slate and piended. The west elevation is 5 bays wide, while the east elevation is 3 bays wide. A single-storey lean-to is attached to the north side.
To the rear sits a mid to late 18th-century dovecot, now converted into a workshop. It is whitewashed rubble with painted ashlar margins. The dovecot is square in plan with a pyramidal roof and a forestair on the south wall, incorporating a door below a triangular flight hole. It is roofed with graded slates and features a weathervane finial. A window has been inserted into the east wall. The farmhouse is possibly the work of Walter Newall.
