Description
Burrance House is an 1823-dated, two-story, three-bay house built against an earlier house, effectively doubling its thickness. It is situated at the south corner of a steading courtyard, which was constructed in 1827 by contractors C. Halliday and R. Carruthers, and has since been altered. The house is built of whin rubble with red ashlar dressings, some margins being painted. Most windows are 12-pane sashes. The south west front features a central panelled door with a decorative fanlight, set within a pilastered doorcase. A band runs along the eaves and lintel, with symmetrically placed stacks and piended roofs. The steading is a complex of buildings, with one or two storeys and lofts. The courtyard is accessed through screen walls and square gatepiers. An L-plan range, partly domestic in nature, adjoins the rear of the house and has a long south west elevation featuring gabled wallhead dormers and a louvered square ventilator overlooking the courtyard. Garage doors have been inserted into the gable of the return. A barn is located to the north, featuring a segmental-arched barn door to the courtyard. A single-story, L-plan range to the north east, also partly domestic, is included for group value and has a segmental-arched cartway to the courtyard, now a window. The south east elevation features drainpipe ventilators and trellis. All roofs are covered in graded slates. The buildings are possibly by Walter Newall.
