Description
Kirkland is an earlier 19th-century, two-story, three-bay farmhouse, accompanied by full-height rear wings. It is constructed of rubble, painted, with contrasting ashlar dressings. The south elevation has a ground floor that projects forward, likely due to a mid-19th century alteration. There’s a continuous etablature running along the elevation, and a central doorpiece with pilasters. The doorway itself is round-headed, with a panelled door and a decorative fanlight above. The windows are 12 or 4-pane sashes, with an eaves/lintel band and a cornice. Two symmetrically placed ridge stacks are present, and the roof is covered in slate, pitched in a piended style. The west elevation has five bays, while the east elevation has three. A single-story lean-to is located at the north side.
To the rear of the house is a mid/late 18th-century dovecot, now converted into a workshop. It's constructed of whitewashed rubble with painted ashlar margins, and has a square plan with a pyramidal roof. A forestair is situated on the south wall, with a door below a triangular flight hole. The roof is covered in graded slates, and topped with a weathervane finial. A window has been inserted into the east wall. The house is possibly by Walter Newall.
