Description
The steading at Burrance House dates to 1827, with the house itself built in 1823 and subsequently extended by being built against an earlier house, effectively doubling its thickness. The house is situated at the south corner of the steading's courtyard. Contractors for the steading were C. Halliday and R. Carruthers, though the steading has since been altered. The house is constructed of whin rubble with red ashlar dressings, some of which have been painted, and features mostly 12-pane sash windows. Its south-west front displays a central panelled door topped with a decorative fanlight, set within a pilastered doorcase. An eaves/lintel band runs along the facade, with symmetrically placed chimney stacks and piended roofs.
The steading itself comprises ranges of varying heights, including lofts. The courtyard is entered through screen walls and square gatepiers. An L-plan range, incorporating domestic elements, adjoins the rear of the house and features a long south-west elevation with gabled wallhead dormers and a louvered square ventilator overlooking the courtyard. Garage doors have been inserted into the gable of a return. A barn stands to the north, with a segmental-arched barn door opening onto the courtyard. A single-storey L-plan range to the north-east, included for group value and also part domestic, features a segmental-arched cartway, now a window, and a south-east elevation marked by drainpipe ventilators and trelliswork. All roofs are covered with graded slates. The layout and design are possibly by Walter Newall.
