Description

Cleuchhead is a small country villa built around 1840 in a style influenced by Walter Newall. It is a single-story building with classical detailing and lying-pane glazing. The building has a roughly rectangular plan, although the roof is more complex. Attached to the north side are L-shaped offices.

The villa is constructed primarily of rough-cut ashlar stone, with polished dressings. The offices are built of rubble. Sash windows are set in full-height, slightly projecting bays with decorative aprons and timber mullions. The south and east elevations are principally three bays wide, with the central bay advanced and topped by a pediment. The east elevation features a simple door surround with a deeply-recessed, panelled and glazed door. Two wider bays are recessed to the right of the doorway. A canted window punctuates the southern elevation. A stone cornice serves as both a decorative feature and a gutter. Chimneys with paired, diamond-shaped flues rise from the building, and the piended roofs are covered with graded slates, concealing a cupola over the main hall. A narrow service court is recessed on the north side and has now been roofed over.

The offices are arranged around a walled and cobbled courtyard, including kennels and a converted cottage.

Inside, the plan is unusual, featuring corridors arranged in a U-shaped design. The interior boasts moulded cornices and panelled doors within reeded architraves.
