Description
Brydekirk Mains is a farmhouse and steading built mostly in the first half of the 19th century, incorporating a fragment of St Bride's tower at the southeast end of the steading court. The structure is primarily rubble-built with ashlar dressings, and the house is now dry-dashed with painted margins. The roofs are mainly covered with graded slates.
The house is two storeys high with four bays, although the northernmost bay is not original. The entrance is centrally located in a modern porch, and most of the windows are sash windows, retaining 6-paned glazing only in the top sashes. The house features straight skews, end stacks, and a rear wing.
The steading consists of plain whitewashed ranges surrounding an open court. The tall southern and western ranges have some blocked openings, while the low eastern range includes a long roof ventilator.
The adjoining tower, located on the eastern gable of the southern range, has been much altered and is in poor condition. The upper part of the eastern wall appears to be rebuilt, with part of the corbel course surviving. The wall facing the courtyard has a two-storey elevation with large slappings and may also be rebuilt. The garden wall contains re-used stones.
