Description
The Walled Garden & Cottage likely dates to around 1759, coinciding with the construction of Carnsalloch House. It comprises a quadrangular garden enclosed by droved red ashlar-coped walls, which are lower and sunk against a bank on the south side. A two-storey, square-plan garden house with a pyramidal roof is situated at the southeast corner, and is now used as a domestic dwelling. Adjoining this are later single-storey, piended cottages constructed of squared red rubble with painted margins. The cottage’s south elevation features bipartites and a central door, all under a slated roof. Glasshouse ranges are largely located along the north wall. A 1911 sale catalogue describes the glasshouses as having been "recently erected by Messrs MacKenzie and Moncur, Edinburgh.”
