Description

Milnhead is a symmetrical, two-storey country house dating from the mid-to-late 18th century. The house is situated on a slope, with a raised basement. Adjoining outbuildings are located to the north, and a garden wall runs along the south side (listed separately).

The house is constructed of coursed and squared red rubble with ashlar margins. The three-bay east elevation features a projecting, pedimented central bay with rusticated quoins. A painted central doorcase is approached by steps, and incorporates a panelled door with a fanlight above. The windows are 12-pane sashes, set beneath an eaves/lintel band. A base course and cornice run along the base of the building. Symmetrically placed chimney stacks rise from the roof, which has a piended form covered in graded slates. The flank elevations are two bays wide. The west elevation is four bays wide, with the inner two bays projecting and piended, and brackets over a mullioned basement window. A small greenhouse stands nearby.

The outbuildings consist of two ranges; a smaller range sits at basement level and is in domestic use. The larger range extends behind a curved quadrant wall and is supported by a series of stone piers; it is situated beside the house. Garage openings are visible on the west wall of this range.
