Description

Whitehills is a two-storey house dating from 1912, built in a simple Arts and Crafts style. The house has an asymmetrical plan, with the first floor extending above the eaves. The exterior is harled, with deep, overhanging eaves and piended roofs. Swept piended dormerheads feature above each first-floor window. The windows are characterised by horizontal glazing.

The south elevation, which is the principal facade, is three bays wide. A garden door is positioned to the right of centre, with a narrow window to its right. A three-light window is situated to the left of centre. A canted window is present in the bay to the left, featuring a three-light window facing south. At ground floor, a four-light window is located in the bay to the right. The first floor has three-light windows in each bay.

The west elevation includes a three-light window at ground floor in an advanced bay to the left, and a two-light window at first floor. A further two-light window is present at first floor within a recessed bay to the right, and under the eaves on the south return. A modern, single-storey addition from the 1980s is set into a re-entrant angle, incorporating patio doors to the south and a multi-pane rectangular window to the west.

The east elevation is slightly advanced to the left and features a tall, tapered wallhead stack rising through the eaves, positioned between two first-floor two-light windows. Ground floor windows include a two-light window to the right, and a window to the outer left. Further windows are present to the left and to the right to the right.

The north elevation is L-shaped, formed by a gabled wing to the left and an adjoining single-storey wing. A door is centrally located, above which is a two-light window at first floor. A ground floor window is situated to the left of the centre, with a small window positioned under the eaves above. A recessed bay flanks the left, containing a three-light stair window. The wing also includes modern windows at ground floor and within a gabled dormerhead at first floor, facing west. A modern window is present in the north gablehead. A small outhouse, with two doors, is attached to the right side of this elevation.

The windows are fitted with multi-pane casements. The roof is covered with grey-green graded slates and terracotta roll ridge tiles. Harled stacks are present, with a small ridge stack positioned to the right of centre on the south roof, and a stack on the west roof pitch.

A terrace and a modern balustraded staircase (from the 1980s) are located in the garden to the south. A piend-roofed outbuilding sits to the north.

A gravestone, dated 1948, features a Celtic cross on a block plinth of rock-faced granite. An inscription on the polished face of the plinth commemorates Arthur Durham Kirby, CBCMG, Brigadier General (late of Royal Artillery), born in Dharmsala, India, on 21 October 1867 and died in 1948, and Mary Muriel Kirby (died 1964). The gravestone is enclosed by a modern railed enclosure.
