Description

Barnbarroch is a house originally built in 1780, with later additions and remodelling by John Claudius Loudon in 1806. Following a fire in 1942, the house is now a roofless shell. It is constructed of rubble with finely dressed granite quoins and margins.

The original part of the house is a classical design featuring two storeys, a basement, and an attic. The symmetrical elevations present three bays on the entrance front and two bays on the garden front. The entrance front has three-window bows on the outer bays, all consisting of single light windows, and steps lead up to the central doorway. The remodelling by Loudon involved changes to the floor levels and the redesign of the main door, which now features a projecting pedimented porch supported by pillars, along with an architraved doorpiece and a blind heraldic panel above. All windows remain as single light.

There are remnants of pedimented attic windows at the centre of the north and southwest wings, which were added in 1805. This includes a two-storey and attic single bay addition, also built of rubble with finely dressed granite quoins, margins, and band courses. On the south elevation, there is a full-height polished cream sandstone projecting bay with a three-light window. The eaves feature a balustraded parapet with ball finials, along with a cornice and tall corniced ends, and axial stacks, some of which have octagonal cans.
