Description
Holly Cottage, together with Millers Cottage, comprises a late 18th century, single-storey L-plan group of cottages situated at Braehead. The buildings are constructed of painted rubble. Millers Cottage presents a three-bay facade to the road, with a central door flanked by windows, and an advanced wing to the right featuring a window in the gable end and on its return. Newton Cottage has painted margins and a piend-roofed extension to the left. This extension has a central door with a light and a timber canopy porch, flanked by windows, with bipartite windows on the return elevation. The windows are sash and case with plate glass glazing. The roof is covered in grey slates, with end, ridge, and mutual gable stacks. Originally, the group may have comprised three cottages. They are an important feature of the small hamlet due to their largely unaltered condition. A garden wall with a pedestrian gateway extends to the right of Millers Cottage. Holly Cottage was formerly known as Newton Cottage.
