Description

Late 18th century, Millers Cottage and Newton Cottage form a single-storey, L-plan group of cottages, located at Braehead. The cottages are built of painted rubble, with painted margins highlighting the window surrounds. Millers Cottage has three bays facing the road, with a central door flanked by windows. An advanced wing projects to the right, featuring a window in its gable end and on its return elevation. Newton Cottage has a piend-roofed extension to its outer left, with a central door, a light above it, a timber canopy porch, and flanking windows. There is a bipartite window on the return elevation of the extension. Plate glass is fitted to sash and case windows. The roofs are covered in grey slates and feature end, ridge, and mutual gable stacks. Originally, the group likely comprised three cottages. They are historically significant to the small hamlet due to their largely unaltered condition. A garden wall with a pedestrian gateway extends to the right of Millers Cottage. The statutory address encompasses both Holly Cottage (formerly Newton Cottage) and Millers Cottage.
