Description
These stables, likely designed around the early 19th century, complement Barnbarroch House, possibly under the direction of J C Loudon, who is known to have remodelled the main house in 1805. The stables consist of four ranges arranged around a courtyard. The prominent, or ‘show front,’ exhibits a Gothic style applied to a late 18th century stable block. It features five buttressed bays, the central bay being gabled with a depressed-arched opening at ground level and an oculus in the gablehead. The remaining bays originally had windows with mullions, though these have been blocked, leaving single-light windows with hoodmoulds. A large vehicle entrance has been inserted to the left of the arched opening. The facade is topped by a deep, plain parapet, and a tall, octagonal stack stands to the left of the gable, likely one of a pair. At the rear are single-storey stables and cartsheds, marked by three basket-arched cart entrances with granite voussoirs. The roofs are a mix of good graded slates and corrugated asbestos. The buildings have been partially converted to residential use and unfortunately altered. The construction is of rubble stone with granite dressings.
