Description

This is an 1868 Episcopal chapel, of rectangular plan and three bays, originally a private chapel at Maxwelton House. The building is executed in a Gothic style. The exterior is constructed of coursed bullfaced pink ashlar with polished dressings. It features windows with cusped-headed lights, and gable windows with cusped tracery. Windows to the south wall have three lights, while the chancel window is a single light recessed in a shallow 2-centred arched panel. A gabled open porch, featuring a pointed doorway, is located at the west end of the south wall. A gabled bellcote sits atop the west gable. The roof is slate, graded in layers, and features decorative cast-iron cresting along with straight skews and gabletted skewputts. A vestry is attached to the north side.

Inside, the windows are leaded and dated between 1868 and 1880. There is good stencil decoration at the east end, and an octagonal pulpit. A gabled lych gate, constructed of oak on red ashlar supports and featuring cusped ornament, stands to the northwest and dates to 1884. The building remains in ecclesiastical use.
