2 Kettleholm Cottages, Kettleholm

2 Kettleholm Cottages is a row of estate houses that appears unified and dates from the mid 19th century, although it has four main building phases from the last quarter of the 18th century to the 20th century. The row consists of two storeys and is arranged as one three-bay house and two two-bay houses, with an adjoining single-storey, two-bay post office added in the early 20th century at the northern gable. The cottages are built from rubble, featuring droved or stugged dressings and late 19th century slab margins, all in ashlar. They are whitewashed with painted margins and have late 19th century timber door pediments, except for the post office. The southern three-bay house (numbers 1 and 2) was built first, while the two-storey house nearest the north, which has slab margins, was remodeled in the late 19th century. The properties have panelled doors with fanlights and sash windows throughout, featuring 12-pane glazing with arched paired windows at the ground level. There are corniced end stacks and slate roofs. Additionally, there are full-height 20th century rear additions on the western side, which include the entrance to number one.
