Description
The stables, built circa 1786 by Alexander Stevens, are a two-storey block situated against a slope and arranged in an L-plan around a cobbled courtyard, which is at basement level. The stables are constructed of coarsely-droved red ashlar with polished margins, featuring square-headed openings and small-paned sash windows, with the first-floor openings generally square.
The south elevation is arranged in a three-bay plus two-bay configuration, with stabling featuring substantial cast-iron Doric columns to the stall bays supporting the upper floor. A depressed-arched carriage house is located to the right, converted in the 19th century (likely by William Burn around 1834), with the carriage openings now windows. One upper window has dovecot flight-holes. A lean-to adjoins the right side, characterized by a wide outer pilaster strip. The west range incorporates an inserted garage opening, and the central part features doors and windows to each floor, arranged in a three-bay design. A full-length lean-to addition extends to the courtyard, incorporating four large garage doors. Corniced stacks are present, and all roofs are covered with graded slates.
The cast-iron columns are noteworthy, particularly if original to the structure. The original carriage house may have been blocked as part of William Burn’s alterations at Raehills House. Shown on a reference document, RHP 10052 in the Scottish Record Office, dated 1788.
