Description

The Gate House at Rowantree House, designed by architect William L. Moffat and dated 1855, was originally a poorhouse and is now divided into private houses. This building features two storeys and has eleven articulated bays arranged in a pattern of 1-3-1-1-1-3-1. A detached single-storey gatehouse with three bays is treated in a similar style.

The long, symmetrical south elevation includes a three-bay inner range with an advanced and gabled inner bay for the entrance, while the gabled outer bays are connected by three-bay ranges, each featuring a door with sidelights. The exterior is finished in whitewashed, stugged, squared, and snecked rubble, with contrasting painted ashlar long and short worked dressings. The doors are two-centre arched, and there are 12-pane sash windows, with the inner and outer ground floor having bipartite arrangements. The building has end stacks on offset bases and straight skews.

The rear (north) elevation is similarly articulated, showcasing outshots, outbuildings, and rubble-walled yards, with four-bay flanks. The gatehouse includes a datestone in the gable head above the central pend, and the roofs are slated.
