Description
Steading in Newton is a 17th century rectangular-plan, 2-storey house that was more than doubled in size during the 18th century with a full-height, full-width addition to the north. A long 2-storey range to the south, now serving as a byre and store, was added in the late 18th or early 19th century. The house was remodeled in the mid to late 19th century, featuring irregularly-placed openings, with all raised three-quarters masonry courses. Most original openings have been blocked, and existing windows have been enlarged.
The building is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings. The original house has a boulder base and roll-moulded openings, while the 19th century dressings are stugged. A modern central porch on the west side and a low addition to the north gable are both harled and painted, with slate roofs. The main door is located near the center of the east wall, with a single window above it. There is a central west-facing first floor window with a raised lintel that is now blocked, flanked by inserted windows. The interior features two vaulted chambers on the ground floor, the larger of which is to the north, each accessed from the main door and lit from the west.
The 18th century addition has a single original ground floor window on the east side, and the roofs have been swept over the first floor windows in the late 19th century. The building has saw-toothed skews and three corniced end stacks. The south range also has some blocked openings, with ventilators inserted in the byre, and the roof is swept at the west over a lean-to.
